Instructor FES 527 - Forest Carbon Analysis for Assessments and Policy Agreements

Undergraduate & graduate course, Oregon State University, 2022

Sustainability of forest ecosystems, and the potential for carbon accounting to meet greenhouse gas targets requires accurate estimates of vegetation and soil carbon stocks and fluxes, and losses due to fire, insects, and harvest. This information supports management and policy decisions at multiple scales. We will investigate the role of forests in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, compare international, national, and state GHG policies, and investigate and compare methods for measuring forest carbon and related emissions. We will also evaluate cap and trade programs and offset programs and what is needed to ensure programs are effective at increasing forest carbon and reducing GHG emissions.
